WORKSHOPS & SEMINARS
In 2014 legendary bassist, Chuck Rainey, and I joined forces to create Rhythm Intensive. In August Rhythm Intensive put together and conducted Chuck Rainey's Bass Camp 2015 in Nashville and Los Angeles. Bass Frontiers Magazine featured a great review of our Nashville camp, click here to read the full article.
We are planning more clinics and masterclasses for 2016. For more information, or to sign up for our newsletter, visit www.rhythmintensive.com.
UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD
In October 2015, I presented a masterclass with Johns Hopkins University Professor Thomas Dolby at the University of Oxford Faculty of Music. Thomas and I brought our expertise to bear on the art of the rhythm section and the skills required for studio performance. We demonstrated how disparate approaches to the process of contemporary music-making can happily coexist and work together.
"John, thank you for putting together such a great masterclass on Wednesday. Everyone seemed very pleased with the event and I bumped into a student at the Spin last night (Jake, the guitar player who played on Sunshine) and he was very pleased to have taken part, and felt that you and Thomas Dolby pitched things exactly right in terms of feedback and critique. He was very aware of how the songs they were performing changed out of all recognition in 20 minutes. Testament to your acute listening skills."

ARTIST PROJECTS & COLLABORATIONS
CHUCK RAINEY COALITION
Chuck Rainey brought together an amazing lineup of musicians in this latest iteration of his band: John Anthony Martinez on drums, percussionist Jose Rossy (Weather Report, Patti LaBelle, Robert Palmer, Talking Heads, and Chic), Dale Morris, Jr on fiddle, Darwin Martin (Sister Hazel, Larry Carlton) on keys, and Giampiero Scuderi on guitar.
CAKEMIX RECORDING SESSION
November 2014–I was back in the studio with Dragon Ball Z composer & producer Dr. Bruce Faulconer. It has been a few years since we have had the opportunity to work on a project together. As always, Bruce had some great arrangements for me to play. It was great working with him again.
RETURN OF THE MACKS
October 2014–A reunion with my good friend (one of the funkiest bass players alive) Mike McKinney and his extremely talented songwriter/producer son Micayle "Mack" McKinney. Mike is best known for his work with Michael Jackson. Mack has worked with Ne-Yo, Bow Wow and Omarion, and Brandy.
We had the opportunity to reminisce about some great music we made together in the past, boba tea (Mack is an expert on the subject), and discussed future projects for 2015. Turn up the funk!
July 2013–I had the opportunity to work and collaborate with UK Sony recording artist Aiden. We shot a video for his single “The Way We Are” in Dallas (with Curtis Randall on Bass, Robert Miller on Guitar, and Rico Gonzales working his magic as Engineer). I also produced Thaddeus Tribbett's rap on Aiden’s "Satisfy Me".
RHYTHMS OF THE ROAD
Rhythms of the Road was a music and travel television program that we filmed along the historic Route 66. The cast and band members were John Sharp (vocals), Wayne Reed (vocals), Michael Hix (vocals), Shelly Knapp (vocals), Danielle Nations (Vocals), Boo Massey (lead guitar), Steve Short (rhythm guitar and fiddle), Mark Gheen (keyboards), Curtis Randall (bass), and John Anthony Martinez (drums).
